Implementation of Noise Preferential Routes

During a trial period throughout 2007, Coventry Airport introduced enhanced noise preferential routes to direct aircraft over lesser populated areas in line with Government policy. The routes were adapted to allow aircraft involved in the trial to carry out Southerly turns earlier than normal. During the trials Coventry Airport received mixed feedback via the dedicated feedback system set up especially for the trial. During the trial Coventry Airport operated extensively from runway 05 (North East) therefore extensive feedback was received. Due to the reciprocal runway 23 (South West) not having an adequate trial period due to the prevailing Northerly wind the trial for runway 23 was extended.

Coventry Airport studied feedback received during the trial and took the decision to permanently implement the enhanced noise preferential route for runway 23 only. The new route means aircraft will be directed to turn left at 500ft above aerodrome level to avoid the residential areas of Leamington Spa, Cubbington and Stoneleigh. Coventry Airport decided to revert back to the original Noise Preferential Route for runway 05 which means aircraft are directed to the navigational aid Charlie Tango (Coombe Abbey) before proceeding on track.
