Coventry Airport announces new flights to Gdansk with Wizz Air
Coventry Airport is delighted to announce more flights by Wizz Air. From next March the airline will be operating 3 times weekly (Tuesdays, Thursday, Saturdays) services to Gdansk in northern Poland, using a 180 seat Airbus A320 aircraft.
Chris Orphanou, Managing Director of Coventry Airport, said: “Existing Wizz Air services between Katowice and Coventry have been extremely successful and we are delighted that the airline is complementing its existing services with the introduction of new flights to the important Polish commercial centre of Gdansk. The West Midlands region has strong historical links with Poland and these new flights are great news for the Polish community, business and leisure travellers.”
Gdansk, situated on the southern coast of Gdansk Bay on the Baltic Sea, is the sixth largest city in Poland and can trace its history back to AD980. The city has been a principle seaport since medieval times and subsequently a major ship-building centre. Gdansk is famous worldwide as the birthplace of the Solidarity movement, which under the leadership of Lech Walesa, played a major role in bringing an end to Communist rule in Poland.

“Coventry airport offers the quality of service that is sought by the low cost carriers - expedient passenger departures, fast aircraft turn-around times and equally quick passenger arrivals - less than 15mins from aircraft seat to terminal exit - key to a low-fares airline,” said Chris Orphanou. Coventry Airport’s management is committed to attracting new airlines and routes to the West Midlands’ Airport and has recently announced a reduction in the fees and charges levied at the airlines using the airport, in some cases fees have been reduced by up to 60%.

Note to Editors:
Coventry Airport was first opened in 1936 and recommenced passenger operations in March 2004. The airport is now used by nearly 700,000 passengers per annum, from Coventry, Leamington, and surrounding areas. In June 07, the two Secretaries of State rejected the airport’s planning application to construct a permanent terminal building for up to two million passengers a year. This decision is now being challenged by a formal appeal.
Wizz Air currently operates a young fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft and offers flights from six bases to 50 European destinations on over 100 routes. The airline offers flights from Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Croatia, Slovenia and Romania. Wizz Air carried more than three million passengers in 2006.
