Coventry Airport Encourages Pedal Power!
In support of Bike Week, the UK’s annual celebration of cycling, Coventry Airport is actively encouraging its staff to cycle to work, by rewarding participants with a free breakfast if they leave their cars at home and travel to work on their bicycles.
Bike Week, which this year is from 16th-24th June, provides the perfect opportunity for participants to discover, or re-discover, the appeal of cycling. Bike2Work has become an increasingly important element of Bike Week, encouraging car owners to try commuting by bicycle, especially for journeys of less than five miles in busy urban areas, when cycling can be faster than any other mode of transport.
“We are delighted to encourage everyone at Coventry Airport to try cycling to work,” said Chris Orphanou, Coventry Airport’s Managing Director. “Not only is cycling an easy and enjoyable way to feel healthy and keep fit but there are the additional environmental benefits too.”
Dean Batt, pictured on the left with colleagues Lucy Woodward, Phil Walford and Ken Lewinson, said: “I have always enjoyed cycling as part of my fitness programme so I was more than happy to cycle to work for a change. And the delicious bacon buttie was an added bonus!”
Coventry Airport takes a very pro-active stance in encouraging its staff to car share or use other modes of transport to get to work. In addition to a popular complimentary staff bus service, which picks up in and around Coventry, the Airport has also provided a cycle shelter to enable staff to leave their bikes in a safe, sheltered zone, it provides showers and lockers for staff and passengers who wish to freshen up after cycling to the Airport and it also offers a discounted fare scheme for staff to utilise the local bus. Coventry Airport recently participated in National Car Share Day and held a successful and fun speed date event for staff, to match them up with a suitable car share ‘buddy’.
