Polish Lessons for Staff
13th June 2007
Coventry Airport goes back to school
Coventry Airport is busy preparing for the July 13th arrival of the first Wizz Air flight from Katowice in Poland and as part of the preparations, front line staff are to receive lessons in basic Polish.
Students of Hospitality, Travel & Tourism from Tile Hill Wood School & Language College recently enjoyed a tour of the facilities at Coventry Airport, conducting customer surveys and learning about ‘A day in the life of cabin crew’. In return, the customer-facing staff at Coventry Airport will receive some basic tuition in Polish provided by Hanna Marzanska, a teacher at the school.
Tile Hill Wood School & Language College is a high-performing school specialising in languages and vocational subjects. 1290 girls study at the comprehensive school, which has a strong national reputation for its modern language provision and innovative approaches to teaching and learning. Students have exciting opportunities in French, Spanish, German and Japanese. “The partnership working between our school and Coventry Airport has already provided some wonderful opportunities for our students,” said Headteacher Mrs Jo Shirlaw. “This type of collaboration demonstrates very clearly the benefits to schools and businesses of working together.”
“We were delighted to accommodate this pro-active contra-deal with Tile Hill Wood School,” said Chris Orphanou, Coventry Airport’s Managing Director. “The Wizz Air flights to and from Katowice are already proving very popular and as a result the start date for services has been brought forward by more than two weeks to July 13th. Coventry and the West Midlands region have strong historical links with Poland and these new flights to Katowice are great news for the Polish community, business and leisure travellers.”
Wizz Air will be operating a three times weekly (Wednesday, Friday and Sunday) service to Katowice, the capital of South Poland, using an 180-seater Airbus A320 aircraft. Katowice is the third largest airport in Poland and the fastest growing major airport in the country. It is the ideal gateway to the Silesian Mountains, for skiing and hiking and also to the popular city break destination of Krakow, just an hour’s drive away.
Coventry Airport’s new management is committed to attracting new airlines and routes to the West Midlands’ Airport and has recently announced a reduction in the fees and charges levied at the airlines using the airport, in some cases fees have been reduced by more than 60%.
”This is one way we can demonstrate our commitment to developing our route network,” said Chris Orphanou. “Wizz Air’s services between Coventry and Katowice are the start of a new era for Coventry and we are confident that other airlines will realise the appeal of the Airport and follow suit.”
