Coventry Airport supports Crimestoppers Initiative
May Bank Holiday weekend is one of the busiest times for UK airports and Coventry is no exception, which is why the Airport has joined forces with Crime Prevention and Crimestoppers to promote awareness of safety whilst travelling.
The promotion at Coventry Airport, which will take place between 0900 and 1300 on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, is part of ‘Operation Gravesend’ - a local initiative between Warwickshire Police and Coventry Airport, designed to educate the travelling public about the do’s and don’ts of safe travel. A promotional stand will be situated outside Coventry Airport’s Departures and officers from Warwickshire Police will be providing free advice to passengers on securing their luggage. The Airport is sponsoring complimentary padlocks for passengers to help ensure luggage arrives at its destination secure and without interference.
Chris Orphanou, Coventry Airport’s Managing Director, said: “We are delighted to assist passengers and support this crime prevention project by raising awareness and promoting security. Whilst we have an exemplary crime record here at Coventry Airport, it is all too easy for passengers, especially holidaymakers, to relax and forget about the important security aspects of travelling.”
Sergeant Andrew Ware, Aviation Policing Development Officer for Warwickshire Police said: “The aim of this initiative is to raise awareness amongst passengers about the risks to their luggage and property if they fail to use padlocks or other security devices. Research has shown that nearly all luggage from which items have been stolen whilst in transit, has not been locked. The use of a padlock cannot guarantee that bags will not be tampered with but the lock will stop the opportunist or organised criminal from simply opening the zip or catch.
“Warwickshire Police, in partnership with Coventry Airport, will follow its vision statement, Protecting our Communities Together, in order to make the airport a safe and secure place for its passengers and staff."
Over the Bank Holiday Weekend, Coventry Airport anticipates carrying more than 8,000 passengers through its terminal to 13 destinations. The most popular destinations are Barcelona, Palma, Pisa and Amsterdam with West Midlands’ holidaymakers hoping for some early summer sun.
