Investment in Coventry Airport already well under way

Coventry Airport’s new management has already put its money where its mouth is and invested more than £3.5m in improvements to the Midland’s airport over the past nine months.

A year ago Coventry Airport was acquired by CAFCO-C and its technical management team, CIAO (Convergence International Airports Organisation) a British company specialising in the design, construction management and operation of regional airports and their infrastructure. The new management embarked on an extensive forward thinking development plan for the airport and imminent approval is anticipated for the construction of a new terminal which will increase the capacity for passenger throughput from 0.98 million to two million passengers per annum.

At the time of the acquisition, the new owners pledged to improve the airport to accommodate the anticipated increase in passengers. Already more than £3.5m has been invested as part of the improvement programme, including an extension to the south apron, the completion of new car parking facilities, resurfacing of part of the runway and general aviation apron, new aerodrome ground lighting, new signage on the runway and taxiways, new ducts for cabling to the length of the runway and ongoing improvements to Air Traffic Control, which alone represent £700,000 of the investment.

“The current facilities at Coventry Airport are an interim arrangement,” said Chris Orphanou, Coventry Airport’s Managing Director. “Our aim is to provide a permanent, efficient and modern airport for our airlines and customers alike. There are detailed planning issues involved but we are committed to working together with the appropriate authorities to develop a new Coventry Airport terminal building to accommodate the anticipated increase in passengers.

“In the meantime we continue to move forward with developing other aspects of the airport, in particular the airline route network. Thomsonfly already operates flights to 13 popular European destinations from Coventry and we are delighted that Wizz Air will be commencing services to Katowice in Poland in July. There is a lot of interest among scheduled and charter operators and we hope to make further announcements about new routes out of Coventry in the very near future.”
