Coventry Airport Public Local Inquiry Comes to an End
The Public Local Inquiry, seeking approval for a permanent passenger terminal for up to two million passengers per annum at Coventry Airport, concluded yesterday, 31 July 2007. The Inquiry has been sitting at Leamington Town Hall since January of this year and the Planning Inspector, Neil Roberts, has considered evidence from local community groups, the Civil Aviation Authority and Birmingham International Airport.
In his closing speech yesterday, Peter Village, QC for Coventry Airport described the benefits of developing Coventry Airport: “The socio-economic benefits arising from the development in terms of the diversification of the local economy, job creation and training initiatives… increasing the image and profile of Coventry and Warwickshire nationally and internationally as a tourist and business destination and the offering of increased choice to local business and leisure travellers..”.
Mr Village also spoke about the complementary role Coventry plays in the region and how, if permission is granted, the airport will be able to operate “successfully but subject to stringent environmental controls”.
Planning Inspector Mr Roberts will now prepare a detailed report and recommendation for submission to the Secretary of State, who will consider the recommendation before making a decision. The Airport is optimistic that a positive outcome will be reached in early 2007.
