Ground Force Style Makeover For Coventry Airport
13th July 2004
Coventry Airport has had a ground force style makeover from local company Beechwood Tree Services.
Although Charlie Dimmock is nowhere to be seen the team from the Arboricultural company in Allesley have been attracting holidaymakers attention by busily transforming the garden areas in front of the Interim Passenger Facility. This is the first time the Coventry company have worked on an airport project.
When the passenger flights with Thomsonfly commenced from Coventry Airport commenced on March 31 the area was occupied by a huge digger, and was then seeded for grass. In May a group of school children from Stoke Park School in Coventry began the airport gardening project by planting a bed of begonias. In a move to make the area more attractive for the airport's customers the land has now been transformed into an attractive low maintenance shrub bed and turf has been laid on the adjoining areas.
Director of Communications for Coventry Airport, Kimberley Kay, said: "Since the passenger flights started in March the emphasis of the airport's activity has been on swift and effective processing of both departing an arriving customers. The limited indoor facilities at the airport, restricted by the planning debate surrounding the Interim Passenger Facility, means that many customers choose to sit outside the terminal on the many garden benches.
"As there have been many sunny and even some hot days this summer people enjoy being able to relax outside - Coventry is probably one of the only airports where you can catch some sun in a tranquil setting before you jet off on holiday. The work by Beechwood makes the area even more attractive for these waiting passengers."
Simon Rotheram of Beechwood Tree Services, said: "We were delighted when the airport contacted us for the garden makeover - it is the first time we have transformed airport land, we hope that this work will lead to opportunities for us at the airport in the future, possibly for the land around the permanent terminal."
