Coventry Airport Plans For Car Parks

13th July 2004

Coventry Airport has announced today that it is finalising planning applications for car parking adjacent to the terminal building on Middlemarch Industrial Estate.

Currently passengers using the Interim Passenger Facility (IPF) park on the old airport car park facilities on the west side of the airport and are transported to the passenger facilities by buses through the village of Baginton. This has been the case since the Thomsonfly.com passenger flights commenced on March 31 2004.

The planning application is for car parking on land adjacent to the Interim Passenger Facility. The new car parking would enable passengers to park their cars and then walk the short distance to the IPF rather than being required to take the bus service.

The airport needs sufficient car parking capacity to accommodate the passengers travelling through the airport. However because the airport is unsure whether Warwick District Council will approve of car parking occupying the land on the business park, two additional planning applications for the same area of car parking spaces on the west side of the airport are also being prepared. The airport is circulating an explanatory letter to Baginton residents to explain the situation and seek their support for the car parks adjacent to the passenger facilities.

Managing Director of Coventry Airport, Bill Savage, said: "The airport has always wanted the passenger parking to be next to the passenger terminal, located on the Middlemarch Business Park side of the airport. This is the most logical location by utilising industrial land as opposed to land by Baginton village, and is also the most effective location for passengers. We hope that the local planning authority can take that view as well.

Letter to Baginton Residents

Dear Baginton Resident,

I am the Managing Director of Coventry Airport. I am writing to you in respect of both the present and proposed car parking arrangements to serve the Airport.

Like me, I believe that the village would wish to see the implementation of satisfactory arrangements for car parking at the Airport. You have a valued interest in those arrangements, and I am writing to explain the Airport's proposed actions which, I hope, will satisfy our mutual objectives.

For my part, I would like to see car parking provided at Airport South. Currently, whilst interim passenger facilities have been relocated to the South side of the Airport on the Middlemarch site, we have no option but to operate passenger and staff car parking at Airport West and (where necessary) bus people to the interim passenger terminal. This is because Airport West is the approved area for passenger/staff car parking and, you will recall, was where the original passenger facilities were located. I appreciate that this is not ideal, and we would like to have sufficient car parking facilities adjacent to the interim passenger facilities, on the Middlemarch site. It is our intention, therefore, to submit a planning application for car parking on land at Airport South.

I very much hope that Warwick District Council will approve this application because it would allow me the facility, together with other existing arrangements, to service the Airport's passenger car parking demand in a location, away from the village. If the Council refuse to approve such an application, then (although we are considering alternative options) it is most likely that we would continue to use (and possibly seek to expand) the approved areas at Airport West.

I appreciate that the car parking arrangement at the Airport is potentially an emotive issue. If you require any further details, then please feel free to contact the Airport. Alternatively, you may

want to write directly to the Council.

I would like to assure you that our goal is to obtain approval for sufficient passenger and staff car parking facilities on the Middlemarch site, so that we would not need to utilise the existing

car park/shuttle bus operations.

Yours sincerely

W H Savage
