Coventry Airport Sets The Record Straight On Local Support
8th June 2004
Coventry Airport has researched the complaints received by Warwick District and found that the actual number of people complaining about the airport was small as many of them had sent numerous complaints with some individuals had sent as many as 10 complaints.
Vast numbers of the complaints were pre-pared letters accessible at the website of Campaign Against The Expansion of Coventry Airport CAECA. Numerous complaints received directly by the airport complain about noisy aircraft however the majority of noise complaints do not correspond with the actual aircraft movements raising the question that people may be timing their complaints to coincide with published flight schedules.
When compared with the number of Thomsonfly bookings from Coventry postcodes the number of complaints was the equivalent of less than 4% of the bookings. Evidently the public are voting with their feet in their support for Coventry Airport and the Thomsonfly.com services.
Interestingly the Binley Woods, Willenhall and Baginton areas of Coventry, which have been the subject of much discussion due to their close proximity to the airport, are the areas with the highest percentage of airport staff and also are the areas of Coventry that have booked the most Thomsonfly flights.
Since the high court judgement Coventry Airport has received many congratulatory messages from local residents and has been providing all passengers of the airport feedback forms to show whether or not the support the airport's development and giving the opportunity to express their opinion. Every form received by the airport has supported the expansion of the airport and statements have included, "The best thing that has happened to Coventry in years" , "a great asset to the area", "puts Coventry on the map" . In addition to this, the website www.supportcoventryairport.co.uk has 1030 registered supporters.
Managing Director of Coventry Airport, Bill Savage, hopes to meet with each of the MPs for the area over the coming weeks to show what the airport means for their constituency - jobs created, flight booking data and feedback from their constituents.
Kimberley Kay, Communications Director of Coventry Airport, said:
"The research has provided clarification that the number of people who support the airport and low fares flights from Coventry Airport significantly outnumber those who oppose the airport's development. Now that the airport's consultation process is back underway it will be possible to address the genuine concerns of local stakeholders."
