Airport Managing Director Asks For Help At Airport Consultation Forum
27th May 2004
At a consultation forum meeting at Coventry Airport on Tuesday (25 May 2004) managing director of Coventry Airport, Bill Savage, asked for help from local residents to reduce the traffic pressure on the village of Baginton.
Coventry Airport held a consultative forum meeting, inviting all the people who had expressed an interest in the airport's development, with both concerns about the airports growth and development and in support of the airport's plans for the future.
In response to over 100 letters to local parishes, environmental groups, local authorities, businesses, groups opposing airport expansion, airport tenants and residents, the airport received responses from 28 organisations and 5 individuals.
Lord Peter Snape, who has agreed to chair the consultative process, conducted the meeting. A range of opinions were voiced during the meeting which is the forerunner to establishing a consultative committee based on the new Department for Transport Guidelines issued in December 2003 and under the new airport operators TUI.
Once the objectives of the consultative process had been established representatives were able to voice their views on their airport, their concerns particularly about noise, airspace management and their views regarding the consultative process. Managing director Bill Savage then responded to each issue in turn to explain, clarify and establish how the airport would address the concerns going forwards.
Mr Savage explained that the airport car parks were presently located on the Baginton side of the runway but he would prefer to locate them on the Middlemarch Business Park side of the runway. He pointed out how this would immediately relieve the road traffic pressure on Baginton village but to do so would need the support of the planning department of Warwick District Council. He noted that at an exploratory meeting with the head of the planning department Mr. John Archer he had been told that there would not be support for such a move. However Mr Savage remarked optimistically that with the help of local residents and stakeholders, the planning authority may be persuaded to assist the airport to relocate the car parks for the benefit of all concerned.
